Lead Certification Process Overview
(Para ver esta página en español, haga clic aquí.)

There are four main steps leading to lead-related construction certification:

1. Eligibility

There are experience and education requirements for qualification for some of the certification specialties. You can determine your eligibility for each of the types of certification by reviewing the eligibility page. If you have further questions about your eligibility, you can contact CDHS at 1-800-597-LEAD(5323) (outside California: 510-620-5694).

2. Training

Everyone who wishes to be lead certified must first take training from a CDHS-accredited training provider. The type of training you need depends on the type of certification you want.

NOTE: In addition to training, there are experience and education requirements for qualification for some of the certification specialties. See Application for Certification below.

3. Exam

Each accredited lead-related construction course includes an end-of-course exam. In addition to that exam, there is also a separate state qualifying exam for the following specialties:

  • Supervisor (given in English or Spanish
  • Inspector/Assessor
  • Project Monitor
  • Project Designer

Applicants for Worker certification do not need to take the exam.

The state qualifying exam is administered by Cooperative Personnel Services. Visit their website, or call (916) 263-3644 for scheduling, exam application, and pricing information.  Click here for more information about the exam, including study guides.

4. Application for Certification

This is the final step in the certification process. For new certifications, you should send an application CDHS/CLPPB containing:

  • Application Form (optional for Workers)
  • Proof of Experience (except Workers)
  • Proof of Training, via the CDHS Course Completion Form
  • Education documentation (except Workers and Supervisors)
  • Photo (print or digital)
  • Fee - $75.00 (check or money order) for each specialty.

NOTE: Your certification must be renewed annually. For more information about applying for and renewing your certification, including application forms and instructions, click here.

Llame 714-220-3922 y able con nuestro departamento de entrenamiento o coreo electronico para mas informacion.

    AHERA (ASBESTOS) TRAINING:

People who are involved in dealing with building materials that contain asbestos must be trained according to U.S. EPA requirements found in the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). The Business and Professions Code in California requires the same type of training as part of the process for becoming a certified asbestos consultant. Five separate "disciplines"; are defined in connection with this asbestos training: Worker, contractor/supervisor, building inspector, management planner, and project designer. To stay current in any of these disciplines, an individual must follow the initial course with annual refresher training. The content and duration for each course are specified in the AHERA model accreditation plan (MAP).

Also according to AHERA requirements, training providers who conduct the training must be approved. Title 8 CCR 341.16, "Approval of Asbestos Training and Course Providers for Training Requirements Relating to Asbestos-Related Work and AHERA", is the regulation which establishes the asbestos training course approval process in California. It is based on the EPA MAP, and is administered by the Asbestos Consultant and Trainer Approval Unit in the Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
